Cricket Wales is delighted to congratulate Rogerstone Welfare Cricket Club stalwart, Derek Picken, on being recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours list for over 50 years of dedicated service to cricket.
Derek, Chair of Rogerstone Welfare Cricket Club, received a British Empire Medal (BEM) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport in south-east Wales. A lifelong player, official, and coach, Derek has been involved with the Newport-based club for more than 70 years.
Now in his eighties, Derek remains actively involved in the club, coaching the junior section and helping to preserve and document its rich history. He also works with the Sporting Memories organisation and has recently collaborated with the Museum of Welsh Cricket at Sophia Gardens.
Cricket Wales applauds Derek’s unwavering passion and decades of service to the game and the wider cricketing community.
Derek Picken, Chair of Rogerstone Welfare Cricket Club, said: “I’m very emotional to receive this honour and it is very pleasing to receive such recognition. I’ve been involved with Rogerstone Welfare CC since 1952 and I really enjoy it to this day. It keeps me active – I can just about handle coaching the Dynamos children at my age of 86 – and it keeps me mentally active as well. I’m going to keep going for as long as I’m able to!”
