Exciting new cricket facilities are set to enhance the playing experience at two of Swansea Council's popular sports complexes.
New non-turf pitches will be installed at Ashleigh Road and Tir Canol, providing players with a consistent, high-quality surface while reducing maintenance costs.
Robert Francis Davies, a cabinet member for the council, stated, "Swansea is a vibrant sporting city, and these new facilities will help cricket flourish for years to come. With hundreds of matches played each summer, these pitches will enable even more games to take place this season."
Victoria Jones, Facilities Investment Manager at Cricket Wales, added, "The introduction of these non-turf pitches across Swansea not only increases playing capacity but also creates vital opportunities for the rapidly growing women and girls' game. The surge in cricket participation calls for innovative solutions to ensure equal access for all. I'm eager to see how these new facilities will positively influence our community and promote inclusivity in the sport."
Construction has begun on Swansea's first two pitches, which will complement the existing cricket squares at King George V Playing Fields on Ashleigh Road. Two additional non-turf pitches will be added at Tir Canol in Morriston in the coming weeks, with one replacing an existing strip and the other being a new addition.
All new pitches are expected to be ready for use in the 2025 season and are accredited by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). This initiative is a collaboration between Swansea Council and Cricket Wales, supported by funding from the ECB and The Hundred competition's Everyone In participation project.
Following the 2025 season, the council will partner with both governing bodies to enhance the existing grass surfaces at Ashleigh Road, Tir Canol, and Mynydd Newydd playing fields, with completion targeted for the 2026 season.
