Ysgol
Gyfun Gwyr in Swansea & Bassaleg School in Newport represented Wales at the
Lady Taverners’ National Schools’ Indoor Finals at Lord’s on the 8th
& 9th May.
Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr represented Wales in the U13
category while Bassaleg School competed in the U15 category.
Both
schools qualified for their Lord’s appearance after winning the Welsh Schools
Indoor Finals at the home of Glamorgan Cricket, the SWALEC Stadium on the 22nd
& 23rd April.
The
UK’s first national girls’ only competition was established in 2003 and
provides a vital pathway for grassroots girls’ cricket. More than 40 schools
from Wales took part in the competition which began with local festivals. Cricket
Wales has been working with participating schools to develop players, train
teachers and signpost players to local club opportunities.
Teams
taking part in the National Finals included some of the top Girls’ Schools in
the Country and the standard of cricket was extremely high. Both schools
represented Wales extremely well and were competitive in all matches. Reaching
the National Finals of a competition involving over 750 schools is a major
achievement and the girls can be proud of their accomplishments.
Cricket
Wales Development Manager Gavin Hawkey said ‘Cricket Wales has identified
girls’ cricket as one of our priorities. Our team of Community Coaches is supporting
the development of cricket in schools, offering an important competitive
opportunity via the Lady Taverners competition and encouraging players to join
local clubs.’
Competition Coordinator Steve Watkins said ‘We have been running the Lady
Taverners’ competition for a number of years but this year saw an increase in
the number of entries on a local level, which contributed to two very
competitive finals days at the SWALEC Stadium. In turn the two teams that
qualified for the National Finals at Lords were more competitive than ever
before’.
