Teams will be vying for a place in the 2016 Final at The Gnoll, Neath on 21st August
The draw for the 2016 Welsh Cup was made recently in the
unlikely venue of Tesco’s in Cardigan.
Entries are reassuringly matching those of the previous year at 64 and
include 14 teams who have not entered in recent times and at least two who have
never entered before.
Entries from North Wales have been particularly impressive
at 18 and this quarter of the draw promises to be particularly competitive. The
number involved requires that a preliminary round be played in late April in
order to reduce the numbers to 16 by May 8th, the date of Round 1. The holders, Colwyn Bay CC will entertain
Menai Bridge in the first round. Another
big tie is the Llandudno/Mochdre encounter, to be played at The Oval in
Llandudno.
Elsewhere, Ammanford, last year’s losing finalists, make the
short(ish) journey to Llanelli on May 8th. Past winners, Cardiff CC
travel northwards to Aberdare and Newport will be entertained by nearby newcomers
to the competition, Newport Fugitives CC.
Swansea will host the match against Llangennech.
Last season, several matches in the early rounds were
conceded – so it is hoped that players will make every effort to make
themselves available in 2016, to make the competition truly memorable,
climaxing in the Final on August 21st at The Gnoll, Neath Cricket
Club.
