Mixed fortunes for Cricket Wales teams

U12 Team v Gloucestershire

Cricket Wales’ age-group teams enjoyed mixed fortunes in their latest matches, with the U15 girls providing a highlight with a convincing away win over Shropshire. After limiting Shropshire to 81-7 in their 20 overs, thanks in part to the bowling of Lili Powell (Cardiff), who took 3-5 in three overs, Wales reached 82 for the loss of one wicket in 15.3 overs, with opener Rose Evans (Gwent) scoring 48 not out.

In another exciting match, The U15 boys came within one run of tying with Yorkshire at Mumbles CC. The visitors were all-out for 190, with Morgan Murray-Williams (Eryri) the best of Wales’ bowlers, recording 4-32. Wales fell just short with the bat – reaching 189-8 in their 50 overs, with Kieron Griffiths (Pembrokeshire) top scorer on 74 from 103 balls.

They suffered a much heavier defeat at the hands of Oxfordshire at Cardiff CC, however, managing 128 all-out – a total Oxfordshire passed with the loss of one wicket.

The U12 boys had a disappointing tour of the West Country, suffering defeats to Devon and Gloucestershire.   An excellent Welsh bowling performance, led by Ben Davies (Gwent) (4-8), restricted the hosts to 64 all-out. But, when they batted, Wales slumped to 9-5 and ended at 61 all-out.

Wales put in another solid bowling performance against Gloucestershire at the County Ground, Bristol, with Davies again leading the attack with figures of 5-36, as the hosts were all-out for 123. The visitors looked to be on course for victory at 82-4 in reply, but collapsed to finish all-out for 114.

Wales’ U13 boys suffered a narrow defeat by Lancashire at Shrewsbury. Batting first, Wales ended their 45 overs on 140-8; but Lancashire reached 142-7 with seven balls to spare.

“Despite some disappointing results in this latest batch of matches, there were some really encouraging performances too,” said Cricket Wales performance manager John Derrick. “Our coaches and managers are working hard with the teams to build on their strengths and work on their weaknesses, so we’re hoping for further improvement as the season progresses.”
