12th April 2013

On Tuesday 9th April 6 coaches from Machen Cricket Club attended a coaching workshop in Ystrad Mynach delivered by Cricket Wales Community Coach Alistair Waldron. The workshop was held after a pre-season meeting between Machen CC representatives and Cricket Wales staff identified a lack a bowlers coming through the junior section. The conclusion drawn was that coaches would benefit from an introduction to new techniques and the workshop was designed to equip the coaches with a set of coaching activities and drills which could be used with young players.
Cricket Wales are supporting Machen CC to establish a new U9 junior club team as part of the Cricket Wales Community Coach Programme which aims to increase the number of junior club teams playing structured league cricket. Clubs joining the scheme receive the support of Cricket Wales staff to recruit and train volunteers, build school-club links and recruit new players.

Steve Keane (Machen CC Head Coach) said: ‘I’d like to thank Alistair for the very successful bowling workshop held in Ystrad Mynach last night for Machen CC coaches. It was an excellent session that conveyed the right amount of information at the right level. We failed to ask a question that he couldn’t answer….next time we’ll try harder!’ Alistair Waldron (Cricket Wales Community Coach) said: ‘The club has shown real commitment towards establishing a new team and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with them. I will be revisiting the club during the season to provide follow-up support.’
