Cricket Wales is sad to announce the passing of John Murphy of Barry Athletic Cricket Club.
Back in the early days of the 70's & 80's when Barry Athletic had a very strong 1st team, John held the position of Chair for BACC, South Wales Schools Cricket Association and was one of the founding members and Chair of the South East Wales Cricket Conference. Including many other accolades his major influence was in schools cricket, an era which has now sadly disappeared.
Not only did he influence off the field, his influence on it was the epitome of how the club game was played, as a gentleman, competitively hard and always in good spirit, earning immense respect from all.
Being greatly known for his leg spin, John also had the pleasure and honour of representing his county at every age level ending with a number of years for Wales Minor Counties. At one point Barry Athletic fielded several squad players; Dyl Samuel, Les Kerr, Paul Adams, Bill Davies to name a few.
John will be sadly missed by the cricket community throughout South Wales.
