Cricket Wales XI Well Beaten by MCC

|

MCC won the toss and elected to bat. Wales opened the bowling with youngsters Michael Jones (Tata Steel) and Harry Powell (Newport) and both achieved early success with a wicket each. MCC fielded a strong side led by ex Lancs captain Mark Chilton and our own Dan Cherry; they took control with Jack Russell (105) and Chilton (86) (3rd wkt partnership 151)and Cherry chipped in with 36 to take the total after 50 overs to 299-6.

Wales got off to the worst possible start with Jason Davies being bowled off the third ball with Lloyd Smith (Panteg) following soon after for 14. That brought Ian Thomas (Port Talbot) (36) and skipper Alun Evans (Ammanford) (55) together to give Wales some hope at 134-3. However, after the dissmisal of Evans, the Welsh boys slumped to a disapointing total of 166 all out.

It was a wonderful experience for the younger members of the team but perhaps the game came to early in the season with many of our players being out in the middle for the first time this season
