Cricket Wales Welsh Cup 2019

|

The draw for the 2019 Cricket Wales Welsh Cup took place last week. Since doing so Cricket Wales has received feedback regarding the differing number of teams within some of the south zones, leading to a large number of prelim rounds in the south east zone (to be played in April), and a large number of byes in the south west zone.

This situation has arisen through a desire to keep travel time - and cancellations perhaps linked to travel time - to a minimum.

However, following consultation with representatives from the Cricket Wales Area Boards and Area staffing teams, it has been agreed that a stronger and better 2019 Welsh Cup would arise if clubs in the south were placed into three broadly equally sized zones, and a re-draw undertaken in the south. This will increase travel for some but conversely will also enable more clubs to play against teams outside of their league structure. The original draw in the northern zone will stand but following the agreement of both clubs Connah’s Quay will host Newtown

We recognise that whether you support the re-draw will be heavily influenced by whether the original draw was favourable to your club or not! However, we are confident that overall a re-draw will lead to a better, fairer, more balanced competition.

The re-draw for south clubs will take place tomorrow (Friday 8th March) and be placed on the website and social media immediately afterwards. It will not be broadcast on YouTube but will be independently witnessed.

I am aware that in the short-term a number of clubs will be inconvenienced by the re-draw, but am confident that the outcome will be a better competition.
