CRICKET WALES PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARDS
At the recent Glamorgan v Surrey T20 game at Sophia Gardens, Cricket Wales held its 2018 Player of the Month Awards for May. June and July. The players were presented with their awards by Aston Martin’s David King and Cricket Wales Talent Development Manager Matt Thompson. The players who received their awards on the night were:
GIRLS
Sophia Smale - May
Sophia is captain of the U13 Girls and during the month of May she scored 248 run at an average of 49.6 Her Highest score was 100 not out off 69 balls v Worcestershire Sophia scored 89 v Devon and 46 against West Glam boys Sophia also took 8 catches and 3 wickets in May
Rachel Priest - June
Rachel is a New Zealand international who has represented the women's team in 2018. She scored 318 runs in June at an average of 45.4 Her highest score was an explosive 106 off 55 balls which consisted of 17 fours and two sixes in an ECB T20 fixture against Gloucestershire. She also scored half centuries against Scotland and Durham to help Wales gain promotion to Division 1 of the T20 vitality blast for 2019. Rachel took 5 stumpings and 2 catches in June
Seren Hughes - July
Seren is part of the U17 and senior women's squad. She scored 323 runs in July at an average of 47. Her highest score was 105 off 111 balls v Wales Over 60s. Seren also scored a further two half centuries against Devon Under 17 and Devon Development squad. Seren took 3 catches and a run out during July
BOYS
Aarush Mehotra (U13 - JULY)
Coming fresh into the side Aarush scored 4 consecutive half centuries and two other scores of 40+. He finished July with 367 runs at 46. Scored just under a third of all runs for the U13s. Further to this he took 13 wickets at an average of 10. This included best figures of 6 for 28 against Hampshire. Aarush also demonstrated his very capable fielding skills taking 8 catches in total and 1 run out.
Harry Friend (U15 - MAY)
Harry scored 268 runs at an average of 89.33 including a match winning century against the England Women's Senior Academy in the ECB County Cup. Either side of his century came two half centuries and was instrumental in building the platform for the U15s to reach the ECB 1/4 Finals.
Gruffudd Owen (U11 - JUNE)
Gruff has enjoyed an outstanding season with the bat and gloves with the U11s and U12s this summer. June saw him compile scores of 94* against Cheshire, 99 for Carmarthenshire against Pembrokeshire in Regional Cricket, and he could easily have challenged for July's & August's awards with a brilliant innings of 123* against Somerset, a century for the U12s against St Stithians followed up by 82 at the King's Festival against California.
