On Wednesday 29th August, 2012 Cricket Wales OSCA (Outstanding Service to Cricket Award) winners and their guests joined Cricket Wales Chairman Roger Morris and Chief Executive Peter Hybart for a celebratory lunch and tea at the SWALEC Stadium. Trophies were presented to the following individuals who will also be invited to the ECB OSCAs to be held at Lords in October:
‘Life-time Achievement’ – Dewi Roberts, Bethesda Cricket Club
Dewi has given over 40 years of service to Bethesda C.C. As a player he came through the junior ranks to become first XI captain and is currently second XI captain. He now uses those years of playing experience to help coach the current crop of young players. During those years of service, his other numerous roles within the club have ranged from Chairman to BBQ chef! He is also a member of the Eryri Regional Junior Development Committee and the club’s representative on the North Wales Cricket League. Suffice to say, Dewi epitomises all that is good in club cricket.
‘Leagues and Boards’ – Brian Crockett.
Brian has had a long association with cricket in Wales. He joined the management committee of the South Wales Cricket Association in 1990, was Secretary from 2000 to 2005 and Treasurer from 2007. He was also the Treasurer of the Swalec Premier Cricket League for its first 2 years. Brian has been the Chairman of the South Wales Junior League for the last 2 years and is also the Treasurer of the West Glamorgan Junior Cricket Development Committee. He served for many years on the Welsh Cricket Association, as Assistant Secretary, and Welsh Cup organiser before the formation of Cricket Wales. He has held the post of Child Welfare Officer for Wales and, although he has not been in the best of health for the last few years, is still the Child Welfare Officer for South Wales.
‘Behind the Scenes’ – Tony Butlin, Radyr Cricket Club
Tony is a committed inspiring youth coach and tireless groundsman at Radyr C.C. where, at 72 years of age, is still donating a remarkable 40+ hours a week to the club. His nomination, while commendable in itself in providing evidence of his contribution to all aspects of the club, was enhanced by overwhelming evidence of support from club members, parents and children. Tony is, without doubt, one of those very special cricket individuals.
‘Young Volunteer’ – Paul Miller, Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches
Aged 24, Paul has been Chairman of the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches for the last 2 years. In his short time at the helm, he has moved the Coaching Association forward substantially, especially keen on making the Region a leading light in the development of girls cricket. On a national level, Paul has also contributed greatly to the new Cricket Wales Junior Council meetings with his ideas on moving the game forward from grass roots level to national level and beyond.
Peter Hybart CEO of Cricket Wales stated: ‘I guess it was symptomatic of the weather this season that the day of Glamorgan Championship cricket was washed out, but despite this it was great to spend time with outstanding cricket people from all parts of Wales who are so passionate and committed to developing our sport’.
