Cardiff Cricket Club have won the 2017 Cricket Wales Welsh Cup by defeating Colwyn Bay by five wickets at The Gnoll on Sunday 27th August
Colwyn Bay won the toss and Captain Sean Morris elected to bat.
The opening pair for Colwyn Bay (Morris & Evans) went off at a brisk rate compiling a partnership of 50 for the first wicket. Cardiff Captain Greg Holmes in an attempt to slow the run rate turned to his spin attack to regain some control of the game. Wickets then fell at regular intervals pegging the North Walians back before a batting collapse saw the last five wickets fall for 13 runs. Prem Sisodiya turned in excellent figures of 4 for 15 off his 8 overs, ably supported by Tom Barry with 3 for 30. The target score of 179 to win was generally assessed by neutrals in the crowd to be at least 30 runs short of the par score.
In reply, Cardiff set off at a really brisk rate compiling 41 for the first wicket until Stef Jones fell. They then got themselves into trouble when Greg Holmes & Andrew Thomas fell for ducks leaving them on 43 for 3. Alun Thomas (17) helped to steady the ship with a partnership of 35 with Alex Milton. Opener Milton was then joined by 16 year old Umar Malik and together they compiled a partnership of 101 for the 5th wicket to bring Cardiff home with 5 overs to spare. Milton finished on an undefeated 77 whilst Malik hit a notable 52no.
Umpires Evans & Holcombe had the difficult job of announcing a Man Of The Match with three main contenders - Prem Sisodiya for his 3 for 15, Umar Mailk for his 52no in a partnership of 101, and Alex Milton 77no. Alex Milton was duly named Welsh Cup Final 2017 Man Of The Match
Chairman Of The Board for Cricket Wales Rod Jones presented the trophy. We were all indebted to Neath CC for being excellent hosts on the day
