ECB Announce immediate changes to transgender player eligibility

|

Following today’s announcement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) regarding updated regulations for transgender participation in women’s and girls’ cricket, Cricket Wales reaffirms its commitment to supporting a game that is inclusive, respectful, and safe for all.

The ECB has confirmed that, effective immediately, only individuals whose biological sex is female will be eligible to participate in women’s and girls’ cricket. Transgender women and girls will remain eligible to play in open and mixed formats of the game. This change follows the recent Supreme Court ruling and updated legal advice received by the ECB.

While we recognise the necessity for this change in light of the evolving legal framework, we also acknowledge the impact this decision will have on transgender players within our community. Cricket Wales is committed to working closely with the ECB, as well as our network of clubs, leagues, and regional partners, to provide guidance, clarity, and support for all those affected.

We remain fully aligned with the ECB’s commitment that abuse or discrimination of any kind has no place in cricket. Our game must continue to be a welcoming space for everyone, regardless of gender identity or background.

Cricket Wales will continue to engage with stakeholders across the game to ensure that respect, empathy, and inclusivity remain at the heart of all we do.
