Young cricketers shine on Junior Welsh Cup Finals Day at Sophia Gardens
Sophia Gardens provided a memorable stage for the Junior Welsh Cup Finals Day as Cricket Wales and Glamorgan welcomed four clubs from across the country to the home of Welsh cricket.
The action opened with Penarth meeting Ammanford in the U13 final. Penarth arrived as South-Central Zone winners before overcoming Lisvane in the semi-final, while Ammanford reached the final after topping the West Zone and beating Hawarden Park.
Penarth won the toss, chose to bat and quickly took command with an impressive all-round batting display. Their top six each passed 20, with Zac Spiers making 33 and Ethan Southwell adding a brisk 32 from 18 balls as Penarth posted 182/5 from their 20 overs.
The total proved too steep for Ammanford, though they battled through their reply before closing on 60/4 as Penarth sealed the U13 Junior Welsh Cup title.
The U15 final followed, with Gowerton facing a strong St Fagans side. Gowerton won the toss and opted to bowl, striking early when Koby Blades was removed for 15.
Ifan Cooper, Lewis Sanu and Jack Buchanan kept Gowerton in the contest with disciplined spells, but St Fagans built a competitive 145/6 thanks to contributions from Nabeel Hussain, Rishi Nair and Jake Parker, who top-scored with 37 from 31 balls.
St Fagans then seized control with the ball, making early inroads into Gowerton’s top order. Oliver Williams led the attack with three wickets, while Jason Mahawaththa and Zane Harris claimed two apiece as Gowerton were bowled out for 54, confirming St Fagans as U15 Junior Welsh Cup champions.
