Midnight Ramadan Tapeball Sessions a Success!

Over recent weeks Cricket Wales has been delighted to facilitate a series of tapeball sessions during the Ramadan period.

These sessions are run through the Chance to Shine street funding that Cricket Wales receives and targets young adults who are 16+ years of age. The Islamic lunar calendar’s ninth month, Ramadan, is celebrated by Muslims worldwide as a time for fasting, introspection, almsgiving and prayer. It is a season of increased reflection and cohesion within and across the community. During this period Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from sunrise until sunset.

The tapeball games were arranged late at night to accommodate the difficulties adults’ experience with work commitments and evening prayers during Ramadan. This enabled participants to enjoy their cricket without sacrificing their religious obligations. The group have had access to four sessions which were held at Sophia Gardens stadium, with each session running from 10pm to midnight.

Cricket Wales Development Officer Mojeid Ilyas said: “really enjoyed this years edition of the midnight tapeball sessions – it was great to have 30+ attending and playing in great sprit, right up until the clock struck midnight! We’re already looking to next year’s edition as well as seeing some new faces at our young adults street sessions after Ramadan.”

Diolch to the Glamorgan Community team for opening their facilities outside of usual hours in a great example of joint collaboration as we continue to ensure Cricket is a sport for all!
